They managed to rally over 70 industry professionals for the production and on December 20, 2009, 30 days after announcing the challenge on their website, they wrapped production on “Closure”, starring Victor Browne, Stephanie Drapeau and Kevin Sizemore. “Closure”, shot on RED, is a dark tale of revenge and redemption. Fresh off the hugely successful Final Cut Pro SuperMeet in San Francisco in February, organizers Michael Horton and Daniel Berube took their event to South by Southwest on March 13, and hit another one out of the park.

This one was just a little different – they scheduled a SuperMeetup, held at MAggie MAe’s on E. 6th St., and it did indeed turn out to be super, with over 450 people attending.

HDSLR filmmaker Philip Bloom and Video Blogger Steve Garfield were present; Steve did a live video stream interviewing filmmakers, while Philip shot a music video on stage of Celeste of The Monarchs. Cynthia Stein of CUTS Austin, the Austin Film Society, Austin Film Meet and ReelWomen teamed up with them to help make the event a success as well.

The event was even listed as an official SXSW party, and it looks like the SuperMeetup my just become a regular event at SXSW.

Next, the SuperMeet juggernaut travels to Las Vegas for the NAB show, with the Ninth Annual Las Vegas FCPUG SuperMeet at NAB set for April 13 at the Rio Hotel and Casino.

The first annual Final Cut Pro SuperMeet, held in London on June 25, drew over 600 digital filmmakers and Final Cut Pro (FCP) enthusiasts to the Kensington Conference Centre.

“This was our first standalone SuperMeet not tied to a trade show and to be honest, we were a bit concerned about the turnout,” said Michael Horton, head of the Los Angeles Final Cut Pro User Group and SuperMeet co-producer. “But the London production and post-production community came through and supported this event way beyond our expectations.”

“It showed us once again how much these SuperMeets matter to digital filmmakers,” added Daniel Berube, head of the Boston Final Cut Pro User Group and SuperMeet co-producer. “Clearly, this SuperMeet was well-timed and very well-received and enjoyed by those in attendance.”The London SuperMeet featured camera demos from UK filmmaker Philip Bloom and post-production workflows from Adobe’s Jason Levine, Digital Heaven’s Martin Baker and Space Digital’s Simon Blackledge and Gary Kelly. Legendary film and sound editor Walter Murch gave an engaging talk on his latest editorial work with Final Cut Pro on Francis Ford Coppola’s newest film, “Tetro.”

“SuperMeets are user-driven events and as such we strive our best to bring to the stage a dynamic range of users working with the various hardware and software we all use in our industry,” added Berube.

In addition to the large crowd in attendance at the London SuperMeet, over a dozen companies were present to show off their wares and solutions in what the SuperMeet organizers refer to as the “FCP Showcase.”

“The London SuperMeet gave us the chance to speak directly with editors, producers and filmmakers in a relaxed, informal environment,” stated Liz Cox, Marketing Communications Manager for JVC Professional Europe Ltd. “With engaging presentations and speakers on the main stage, combined with the chance to demonstrate our products fully, the London SuperMeet worked really well for us.”

“We can’t do these SuperMeets without these companies,” added Horton. “They are the ones who pay for these events and keep it affordable for the attendees. We can’t say enough about their generosity, let alone the quality of their products and their ability to solve our production and post-related issues in our community. The FCP Showcase is a huge part of these SuperMeets and we are grateful to all of the companies who participate.”

Michael Horton and Dan Berube were guests on MacVoices #977, talking about the preparations for the London FCP SuperMeet

The next SuperMeet is scheduled for Amsterdam on September 13. Complete information on location, tickets and more is available on the Final Cut Pro User Group Network web site.

The SuperBooth will serve as an extension of the the Eighth Annual NAB FCPUG SuperMeet, to take place on Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at the Rio Hotel.

“We have always wanted space on the NAB show floor, but could never find the resources or money to afford it,” said Michael Horton, founder of the Los Angeles Final Cut Pro User Group and co-producer of the SuperMeets. “But this year we have gotten tremendous support from the community who are donating their time and expertise to make this booth happen. Our plan is to make the SuperBooth a social gathering spot for all Final Cut Studio users and Digital moviemakers who find themselves in need of learning and connecting.”

“With Apple not on the show floor this year it is our hope that the SuperBooth will fill part of the void,” added Daniel Berube, founder of the Boston Final Cut Pro User Group and co-producer of the SuperMeets. “We will have something different going on every hour for all four days of the NAB SHOW. There will be daily “Guru Hour” where you can get all your Final Cut Studio problems solved by some of the top FCS experts in the world. Sit or stand awhile to view presentations of workflow ideas, show and tells, new products, and much much more. We are just getting started on what to do with this booth. We are very excited.”

The SuperBooth, (#SL10129) will be located near the Blackmagic Design booth in the lower-lower South Hall. Agenda for the SuperBooth is expected to be posted on the SuperMeet web page on April 1, 2009.
The Eighth Annual FCPUG SuperMeet is looking to be another sell out according to the producers.

“Despite the economy ticket sales are tracking about the same as they did last year and last year was the largest attendance we have ever had at any SuperMeet,” stated Michael Horton. “Historically every SuperMeet has always sold out.”

Added Berube, “Creative people need these types of events, not only for the networking opportunities which are vitally important during these times, but to add to their skill by taking advantage of events such as the SuperMeet and now the SuperBooth.”

The SuperMeet will feature user driven presentations from Blackmagic Design, JVC, Adobe and many others. There will be presentations on revolutionary new Final Cut Studio workflow ideas, show and tells, tips and tricks and a Raffle where tens of thousands of dollars worth of prizes will be handed out to dozens of lucky winners.

Final agenda for SuperMeet is expected to be posted in early April. Tickets are on sale now online only for $10.99 (USD) each. Daily updates as well as a link to purchase tickets can be found on the SuperMeet web page.

The Diablo Valley Macintosh Users Group steps up to the plate to make it three days a row anchoring the Mac User Group Booth. Today, they partner with SF Cutters, a local Final Cut Pro User Group, to help make attendees aware of the depth and diversity that is the Mac User Group community.

The User Group Lounge will wrap up with a special presentation by John Christopher of DriveSavers. John is always entertaining with his takes of disk disasters and heroic data recovery, so be sure to stop in to learn more about what they do. You can bet that your MUG’s members will ask about DriveSavers sooner or later.
