The MUG Center Survey: How much lead time is needed for your group's newsletter?

Feb 23 - Mar 1, 2005
Most user groups produce a newsletter of some description. Whether online, by PDF and electronically distributed, or in traditional paper form, these publications take time to prepare. Your newsletter editor has a deadline for each issue's submission.

  • We get so little direct input from members that our Editor will perform handstands to make sure that anything that DOES get submitted gets in toute suite!
  • As long as no major editing is required.
  • sooner is always better but I am frequently looking for filler at the last minute.
  • I publish monthly. Everything I receive up to the day I do layout gets published. This may mean 30 days, if I just published, or one day, if I am just about to put an issue out.
  • Ours is electronic and sent out whenever an announcement important to our group occurs.
  • Paper version - typically 6 days from editing to mailout
  • weeks if we're lucky, including turnaround from prepress to paper to mailing time.
  • We use our homepage as an information vehicle
  • AMUG (Arizona Macintosh Users Group) has a 28 page printed newsletter, so I spend about 4-6 days on it. The printer takes a week to turn it around. Then it has to be mailed.
  • With 1 person compiling, it takes several months to gather enough for 1 issue
  • Articles to me by the 20th, to the proofer by the 25th, to the printer by the 27th.
  • although usually crammed the day or two before deadline!
  • Hmmm, Deadlines, I've heard of those but our writers don't have a clue what that is...
  • I try to finalize the nl the Sat morning before the next Wed meeting
