TMC Survey: What Special Interest Groups (SIGs) Does Your Group Offer?
Mar 30, 2005 - Apr 5, 205
Many user groups attempt to address specific topics popular with their memTMC Surveybers through special interest groups (SIGs). SIGs allow detailed examination of specialized topics without diluting main meetings or focusing the entire group's activities in a single direction.

  • Photoshop/DTP-combines "Digital Photography" and "Desktop Publishing"; our "Novice" SIG is called Beginners; our "Digital Video" is called Multimedia

  • We periodically take time at general meetings to describe the concept of SIG's and to ensure members know that the Executive is inerested in helping SIG's promote themselves. But to date we have never had anyone willing to take on the role of SIG Coordinator. Our MacHelp Session, which is what we meant in checking the Novice checkbox, runs for one hour prior to each general meeting. It is not really a SIG but rather an open invitation for any member to bring their questions or problems to others for possible resolution. But it is the closest we have gotten to a true SIG.

  • AppleWorks, Microsoft Office, Mac OS X Basics, Mac OS8/9 Basic, Mac OS 6&7, Mac OS X Advanced, Mac Help (a general Q&A) NAGS (for raw beginners), MacFourm (News & Rumors), Investement & Finances, MultiMedia, Retirees & Others, Photoshop, GPS & Computers, Introduction to FirstClass

  • Right now we don't have SIGs, but we evaluate their need each year and give them a year's life, with limited funding to the SIG leader. In the past we have had Genealogy, Astronomy, Investing and Web Publishing
